MicroG vs GApps: Which Should You Install in 2026?
A practical comparison of MicroG and the various GApps packages (OpenGApps, NikGApps, MindTheGapps). When to use which, and the privacy trade-offs.
GApps (Google Apps) packages bundle the real, proprietary Google Play Services along with Gmail, Maps, the Play Store and other Google apps. They are installed by flashing a zip in recovery before first boot.
MicroG, by contrast, is a single APK you install after the ROM is running. It implements the same APIs but contains no Google code.
GApps pros: 100% compatibility with every Google-dependent app, including ones that detect non-Google environments. Cons: large download, deep system integration, telemetry by default, and you cannot uninstall it without re-flashing.
MicroG pros: tiny, transparent, no ads, no tracking, can be removed like any other app. Cons: a handful of niche apps refuse to run, and SafetyNet may require additional configuration.
Rule of thumb: if you primarily want privacy, install MicroG. If you want the absolute easiest path and don't mind Google's data collection, install GApps. The two should never be installed together.
